Dom Placid Spearitt’s Funeral
We have received word from the Benedictine community regarding Dom Placid Spearitt’s funeral arrangements.
Dear Friends,
Last night we received word from the Ampleforth Abbey undertakers that Fr Abbot’s body will be flown from London to Perth on Thursday night, 16th October 2008. It will arrive on Saturday morning. We are now in a position to confirm the arrangements for his funeral. They will be as follows:
Monday 20th October – Vigil at the Abbey Church, New Norcia at 6.30pm
This will take the form of the monastic community’s Evening Prayer from the Office for the Dead. Fr Abbot’s body will be present for the liturgy. Afterwards a light meal will be offered at St Ildephonsus College.
Tuesday 21st October – Requiem Mass at St Joseph’s Church, Subiaco at 10.00am
This will be the main public liturgy. The monastic community will remain outside the church afterwards to greet friends but unfortunately we are unable to offer refreshments. The hearse, together with the community and family need to return to New Norcia for the burial in the late afternoon.
Tuesday 21st October – Burial in the New Norcia Cemetery at 5.00pm
The monks, family and other mourners will gather outside the front gates of the Monastery at 5pm and then process to the cemetery following the hearse. After the burial, refreshments will be offered at St Gertrude’s College.
We realise that a great number of people wish to join us for Fr Abbot’s funeral and we hope that these arrangements will allow our Friends to attend whatever is possible for them. We are especially grateful to Fr Joe Walsh, the Parish Priest of Subiaco, for offering us the use of his church.
On behalf of the monks of New Norcia, let me thank all those who have sent cards, emails and flowers expressing your sympathy at this most difficult time. Your love and thoughtfulness have been a great comfort to us.
