This program will resource Christian leaders who want to be catalysts for change in their churches and local communities—towards a sustainable world.

The Hot Gospel program was written by Dr Ian Barns, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Sustainability, Environmental and Life Sciences at Murdoch University. It was first run at Mt Pleasant Uniting Church in 2008global-warmingParticipants in this program will have the opportunity to….

  • Reflect biblically/theologically on why and how Christians can respond to global climate change
  • Be resourced with ideas and stories for leading parish and community based change
  • Develop a personal “next steps” action plan for leading in local contexts
  • Access ongoing telephone mentoring and coaching support

The Program

The program will be run over seven weeks, 7—8.30pm at St. Luke’s Anglican Church Hall; cnr of George and Rowland St. Maylands

11 May 2009 Dinner (bring and share) , introduction and movie night
18 May 2009 Hot Gospel 1: Does creation have a future? [resurrection, renewal and the reconciliation of all things—eschatology and hope]
25 May 2009 Hot Gospel 2: A Good News story to tell [where is God in our modern, consuming, technological world?]
1 June 2009 Hot Gospel 3: Food that builds community reflecting on how Christians produce and consume food]
8 June 2009 Hot Gospel 4: A role for rulers [what do we want governments to do in response to Climate change and oil depletion?]
15 June 2009 Personal household planning [participants will estimate their own household carbon footprint and make a personal plan—with guest Environmental Scientist]
29 June 2009 Leading change in churches and communities [Next steps]

Cost

The total cost of the program is $110 (no GST) per participant which covers suppers and all resources.
Church councils may wish to subsidise their nominated representatives.

The Facilitators

Felicity Roux holds a Masters Degree in bioethics and ecoethics from Notre Dame. She is a Diocese of Perth Strategy Leader for Environmental Responsibility. On weekends, she loves showing her 3 children how to stake the tomato plants sprouting in their veggie patch.

Michael Wood is an Anglican Priest who works in university chaplaincy and in private practice as a “leadership for sustainability” facilitator and coach. He has 2 children and a passionate concern for what kind of world we are leaving future generations.
