CARAD – Coalition for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees and CASE for Refugees present their Annual community forum on the 31st of August, 2009.
2009 Inaugural Speaker: David Marr on the topic: Who Shapes our Fears? The role governments, oppositions and the press play in alarming Australians about refugee boats.
David Marr writes about politics, law and the arts for the Sydney Morning Herald. He has also presented ABC TV’s Media Watch and written a number of books including a biography of Patrick White and (with his Herald colleague Marian Wilkinson) Dark Victory, an account of Australia’s blockade of refugee boats during the 2001 election campaign. Refugee issues have been a focus of his work for a number of years.
CASE for Refugees is a not-for-profit community legal centre specialising in refugee and migration law. CASE help refugees who need assistance with their legal applications to stay in Australia. Their vision is to achieve equality, access to justice and a commitment to human rights for refugees. www.caseforrefugees.org.au
CARAD has provided settlement services for about 4000 refugees. CARAD are now the agency of last resort for asylum seekers with complex claims. CARAD helps former clients whose families join them; provides homework support to children and language tuition to women at home. CARAD have a worker at Christmas Island and also visit detained asylum seekers in Perth. They advocate for individuals and for systems changes. www.carad-wa.org
