Churches call for action to address prison overcrowding

The Uniting Church Synod of Western Australia and the Anglican Diocese of Perth have expressed their concern over the current levels of overcrowding in Western Australian prisons.
At their respective annual meetings held in recent weeks, the Uniting and Anglican Churches each passed resolutions calling on the Attorney General and Minister for Corrective Services to act quickly to respond to the issue of overcrowding in WA Prisons.
The Most Reverend Roger Herft, Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Perth said ‘our churches are deeply concerned about the conditions in which prisoners are being held. The current conditions have the potential to lead to more physical and mental consequences for people who are, perhaps, already at breaking point’.
‘Our concerns are shared by our chaplains who work within prisons and are seeing the effects of overcrowding first hand. We are concerned that the level of overcrowding in Western Australian prisons has become dangerous, with the likelihood of violence, self-harm, suicide and rioting increasing as a result’. Statement on Reinstatement of the Racial Discrimination Act NT

9th October 2009
The Executive of the Council of Churches of Western Australia (CCWA) welcomes the move of the Federal Government to reinstate of the Racial Discrimination Act in the Northern Territory, and calls for the Federal Government to go further to review all Aboriginal policies to ensure that they are in line with Australia’s international obligations, especially those now involved with the Northern Territory Intervention.
UN Special Rapporteur Professor James Anaya has pointed out that the Northern Territory Intervention, in its current form and in its delivery, “is incompatible with Australia’s obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Australia is a party to both treaties. The intervention is also incompatible with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which Australia supports”. Climate Change Prayer

The Council of Churches of WA invites you to join in a prayer vigil to support the discussions at the UN Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December this year.
Mankind has already added enough greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to raise temperatures to a dangerous level, and this is already leading to increased incidences of drought, heatwaves and heavy storms. The purpose of an ambitious and effective international climate change deal is to avoid catastrophic climate change and to help the most vulnerable countries adapt. The world has only a very narrow window of opportunity to undertake a first dramatic shift towards a low carbon society and to prevent the worst scenarios of scientists from coming true.
The UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this year will be the moment in history in which humanity has the opportunity to rise to the challenge. Continue reading ‘Climate Change Prayer’
