Calling all activist to participate in our 16 days of activism.
As part of the Amnesty International Stop Violence Against Women Campaign we are creating a 16 days calendar of events which begins November 25 the International Day for the elimination of Violence Against women and December 19 International Human rights Day. These two dates were chosen to highlight that violence against women is a human rights abuse’.
This year we are asking you to organise or participate in an event to show your ongoing commitment to ending violence against women and embrace this year’s theme, Commit – Act – Demand: We CAN End Violence against Women! We encourage groups to focus their planning for the 16 Days of Activism on events and activities that assist to end violence against women and children and to support Women Human Rights Defenders. Your contribution will show that on a community level we can and do make a difference. Your event can be as grand or simple as you like. The Women’s Council website has information about previous events held that may assist you in putting together your own event.
So use the website or liaise with other participants and show you are prepared to Commit, Act and Demand.
Reclaim the Night March, rally and entertainment
Friday 30th October 2009
Gather at the Wellington St exit of Perth train station at 6.30pm. March starts at 7pm sharp, finishing at Stirling Gardens for speaker, performers and entertainers.
Reclaim the night represents a claim for women’s basic human right to live in freedom from the fear of violence. We protest for women to have the right to walk freely at night , free from the threat of rape and sexual violence.
The march and rally are for women and children only. This policy was not made with the intention of excluding men, but rather to ensure the inclusion of all women.

The Art and Heart of Creative Conflict
A program for personal and community capacity-building
in creative and constructive conflict transformation.
During this full-day, interactive workshop participants will consider the underlying principles, and essential practices,
that make for creative engagement with conflict in daily life.
Constructive conflict is welcome as a stimulus for innovation, for inspirational performance and for the wellbeing of people who care deeply about their place of work. Such conflict produces growth in people and in organisational health. However, certain types of conflict also have the potential to create a negative impact on workplace productivity and can severely contaminate relationships, even leading to various forms of abuse and violence.
This program provides participants with an opportunity to identify and address many of the common factors that initiate and influence the growth of destructive and debilitating conflict in organisational and social systems, while also expanding their personal capacity to enagage creatively in constructive conflict.
In addition, leaders and managers who adopt a coaching role within their teams will find this program particularly relevant.
Participants will be provided with opportunities to:
- Recognise how their own experience influences the way they see the world of conflict
- Understand the influence of destructive conflict in the systems within which they live and work
- Reflect on dominant styles of communication during conflict
- Identify and practice the skills of staying connected with others during conflict, through personal presence that evokes empathy and compassion
- Remain faithful to their own truth while choosing not to violate the truth of others
- Cultivate and sustain personal energy for inspirational conflict
The facilitator is Brendan McKeague, an associate of the The Winding Staircase and a member of the international Pace E Bene Nonviolence Service, who has worked as a facilitator, educator and conflict practitioner in Australia and overseas. Brendan comes from Northern Ireland where creative, nonviolent conflict continues to create breath-taking results in difficult situations.
The interactive, co-learning process designed for this program is based on contemporary principles of adult learning and includes small group and plenary sharing, an appreciative inquiry approach, activities for skills enhancement and time for personal reflection.

“We didn’t offer up our land … We’re still fighting for food, about education, health and poverty issues. How can we be fighting against uranium mining and waste dumps on top of all that?”
Indigenous communities and traditional owners continue to suffer the direct impacts of the nuclear industry, yet their voices are often the least heard. Inhabited provides a powerful opportunity to reflect on the industry’s legacy in Australia and is an important exhibition for Western Australia as the Barnett Government continues the push for WA to open up to uranium mining and become a nuclear state.
Supported by: Conservation Council of Western Australia , Film & Television Institute WA and the Mineral Policy Institute
‘Inhabited’ is an initiative of Friends of the Earth Australia and an event in the Fremantle Festival
