This series of talks on Hinduism (26 May), Buddhism (2 June), Islam (9 June) and Judaism (16 June) will be delivered by an expert in each world faith, and followed by comment on the differences and commonalities between that particular faith and Christianity. Edinburgh 2010
The Council of Churches of Western Australia invites Christians with a passion for mission to join in worship to mark the centenary of the World Missionary Conference. The service will feature participation by people from a range of Christian churches and diverse cultural backgrounds. The Speaker will be Dr John Shepherd, Dean of St George’s Cathedral. Tara Curlewis in WA
The Council of Churches of Western Australia was pleased to host The Reverend Tara Curlewis, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in Australia.
Tara arrived on Friday and participated in meetings with the staff in the CCWA office. On Friday evening, a dinner was held at St Patrick’s Anglican Church, Mount Lawley. Members of the Executive and Friends of CCWA enjoyed a delicious meal catered by parishioners from Maylands Anglican Parish. Rifat Kassis Visit
Rifat Odeh Kassis is a Palestinian Christian and human rights activist born in Beit Sahour. He is a prominent member of the Palestinian Lutheran community and member of its Church Council, has held a range of positions within human rights and advocacy organisations within Palestine and internationally including Special Adviser to the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches and member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on the Welfare of Children.
Rifat Kassis has authored two books, Palestine: A Bleeding Wound in the World’s Conscience, co-authored with Dr Mitri Raheb and Christian Community: Facts, Figures and Trends. He had also held the position of Editor of Chain Reaction, the WCC periodical on Palestine and Israel. Continue reading ‘Rifat Kassis Visit’
Sorry Day 2010
Truth, Justice and Healing for Stolen Generations
Come along and join in this important event which commemorates the history of forcible removal of Aboriginal children and its effects on Aboriginal families and communities. It is also a time for all of us to commit to working together to ensure proper reconciliation in this country.

From the 13th General Assembly of the CCA
The Council of Churches of Western Australia joins with the National Council of Churches of Australia in warmly welcoming the recent appointment of Rev Henriette Tabita Hutabarat-Lebang to the position of General Secretary of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA). The Rev Hutabarat-Lebang is the first woman to be appointed to the top administrative position of the Council.
A pastor’s daughter, Hutabarat-Lebang hails from Sulawesi, one of the four larger islands of Indonesia. She was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1992 and has served in senior positions in Asia and internationally. Continue reading ‘From the 13th General Assembly of the CCA’
One Small Step
Christians and Churches in Western Australia will be using the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, May 16-22, to take ‘One Small Step’ towards ecumenical co-operation.
The Council of Churches of Western Australia has released a set of resources to assist individuals, groups and churches to take ‘One Small Step’. Member churches are being encouraged to do small things, such as:
- Join forces with the prayer group from another church
- Invite friends or colleagues around for dinner and prayer
- Invite clergy from the church down the road for breakfast and prayer
- Go for a walk with a neighbour and pray for your local area
- Invite leaders of another youth group to eat pizza and pray
- Have a combined function with the men’s or women’s group from another church
Over the course of the campaign, stories of those who take ‘One Small Step’ will be published on the Council of Churches Website churcheswa.com.au/onesmallstep Continue reading ‘One Small Step’
Invitation for Sumbissions to UNHCR-NGO Consultation
The Australian Refugee Rights Alliance (ARRA) is calling for brief submissions from individuals and refugee community groups regarding curent issues of concern to refugee populations in and from the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa regions.
ARRA is a coalition of Australian NGO’s, refugee advocates and academics. Organisations involved in ARRA include the Centre for Refugee Research of University of NSW, Refugee Council of Australia, Amnesty International and Act for Peace (National Council of Churches). Each year, representative from ARRA travel to Geneva to participate in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ NGO consultations.
